There is still good in you....I can sense it!!

I was wondering what I'm gonna do when my 2488 finally gets beyond the repair-able stage. It is ok now, but all things digital do eventually die, hard drives go out, etc.

So I am wondering now, while there is still time to plan and save $$$$$$, if Yamaha is a good brand of hard disk recorder to work with or look into?? Any one with experience on a Yamaha machine that is similar to or slightly more powerful than a 2488?? No hurry..... I still have time and a new hard drive to wear out before I have to deal with this issue.

Gary,

As a Yamaha user myself, I can tell you that I am a very happy user of a 01X....

I prefer to have the capability to use any sequencer of my choice in a PC, rather than tying myself to a hardware recorder..

Having said that, yamaha launched recently the AW1600 and the AW2400

Thanks Frank, I'll do some research on their stuff. I got to thinking that Yamaha is one of the few brands that I have never had any problems or repair issues with at all (except for the time UPS smashed my KX88 - but they eventually paid for it). I've had good luck with Roland stuff, but their manuals and their architecture always look like they were designed by a Sith Lord. The Roland price tags are always a lot higher too. I'm thinking Yamaha has decent sound, you certainly made it sound good at your place, and they have usually had pretty good documentation, and ok prices. Might be a more affordable alternative than the Tascam stuff or some of the other brands out there. And they are somewhat "universal" when service is needed. That's been my experience with them in the past.....

I found the AW series to be the least intuitive of the big name brands.
I bought a Fostex 12 years ago, and it still records beautifully today, but if I'd have stayed in the Hardware domain, the 2488 was my choice.
Roland lands in second place for least intuitive, mainly because of the manuals, just awful!
Korgs manuals suck also, but the machines are very easy to navigate.
Sonar, is really the easiest to get used to, but if you're a hardware guy, like I was, there's a bit of a learning curve.
That said, I rarely use the Fostex at all these days, Sonar just does it all.

Funny comment bout Sonar.  I was a complete and total hardware guy.  I found Sonar to be very intuitive.  Took me about 10 minutes and I was tracking away.  Of course, I'm a jeanius. Kiss
